Kelly Rowland held a charity event in Houston in support of her new foundation “I heart My Girlfriends” this past Saturday. Former Destiny’s Child bandmate Letoya Luckett as well as Lala Vazquez and DJ Brandy Garcia came out to support the event which included beauty tips, music, a fashion and step show.
Last night, BET aired it’s first original music documentary special, “My Mic Sounds Nice: A Truth About Women and Hip Hop”, which gave the viewer a detailed look at the role of female rappers in the hip-hop industry.
The first part of the documentary analyzed the female mc's of the 80′s & 90′s, in which the majority of them had to come in the game as a battle rapper. They were so raw, they didn't have a stylists and they had to rap like the guys to get respect. The special asked the one question that’s on everyone’s minds these days: “Why aren’t there more women in hip-hop?”
After watching the documentary it’s manifest that the industry is sexist. Most women who come into the game have to be backed up by a crew or co-signed by a male. Former BET host Big Lez questioned “Why do you need a male rapper to validate that this female has skills”?. Producer Jermaine Dupri replied that most female artists have to be developed first. “Lil Kim was a developed artist by Biggie and you could tell. Da Brat was a developed artist by me. You have to put work in to make these artists work. You don’t just put them out”.
The issue with that is that if a female rapper is introduced to the game by a male, if “anything happens to him, [it] happens to you. Historically you saw that they couldn’t stand on their own without their male counterpart“. A lot of the participants in the special also pointed out that a female emcee is a bigger risk to the labels because it can be costly developing their entire look. Budgets for female artists can become outrageous when labels factor in hair, make up and performance outfits. “For women there is this whole image that has to be built around them. And so I think labels at a certain point wanted to stop dealing with female emcees because it was too much of a headache,” said journalist Kim Osorio.
The documentary also spoke about the careers of Lil Kim & Foxy Brown (both rhymed about sex when they entered the game) Lauryn Hill and Missy Elliot with commentary from the likes of Salt n Pepa, Roxanne Shante, Missy Elliott, EVE, Trina, Yo Yo, MC Lyte, Lil Mama, Rah Digga and more.
“Male rappers have such an amazing amount of power and influence and if they’re spending a majority of the time dissing African-American women then what is expected of the people that they are performing for or the people that are buying their records. It’s not much to be said for them wanting to spend money to hear an African-American woman speak her mind…A woman’s voice to this game right now is so extremely necessary to save it.” -MC Lyte

Apparently, Playboy doesn't want Montana Fishburne's sloppy seconds.
A day after test shots it was said that her appearance in an upcoming issue is likely a no-go.
"It's not for sure yet, but I don't think they're going to use her," the insider says.
"Before the sex tape came out, Montana came into Playboy for a test shoot".
Playboy often does tests to decide if a wannabe model is spread-worthy..In the photos Fishburne is seen posing naked in a blue lace number, and goes full frontal for a few shots.
But with Montana's body already on display in the sex tape and her assets featured on the cover of As Is magazine, Playboy has cooled on the idea of featuring Fishburne...
The lack of Playboy exposure might be a blow to Montana's portfolio, and im sure it will make her dad happy, for a change. Lol.

9 years since Aaliyah passed and her memory still lives on. I remember watching MTV when they aired The Diary of Aaliyah a few days before she passed in 2001. She was so pretty and sweet and to top it all off she can really sing! The Diary special really showed how down to earth she was as an artist.

Nicki recently sat down with Honey Magazine. She talks about her new album Pink Friday which is scheduled for a November 23rd Release. During the interview, she reveals that she wanted to release her album next year because she doesn’t think she has a big enough fan base yet.
She also claims that there is not as much buzz around her as people may think..
“People act like I have this really big buzz but I don’t really see it. To be honest, it’s not as big to me as people act like it is. I have to do so much work to promote – more work than other people because people expect me to lose.
“At 14 I was obsessed with Mr. Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones and yes I do know his full name (laughs). Every publicist, every artist who crossed paths with him and who knew me was like ‘Yo, you have to meet Solange, she’s like your biggest fan’ I used to get his name encrusted in my nails in junior high. I actually got an in-school suspension over a Nas poster. He had of course the infamous ‘God Son’ tattoo and I had the poster in my locker. I went to a Christian school and the dean of the school told me it was blasphemous to have that picture and I said ‘Well if I take down his poster then the girl four lockers down has to take down her Justin Timberlake poster because he had his shirt off and he had a cross across his chest. So yeah, I didn’t take it down and got suspended…"
Her days of sobering up are revealed in an episode of VH1's Behind the Music, airing tomorrow night. It marks quite the rapid-fire turnaround—both for the TV show's production team and for the singer herself, who thankfully is no longer in such a dark place.
"I didn't have any fight in me," she says. "I didn't care about anything. I just wanted out. At that moment I wanted out. I wanted it to be over with—all of it, all of that s**t."
"I just sat in the closet and looked at the mirror and took all the pills in the bottle. I wanted to go to sleep and just be at peace. I knew exactly what I was doing. You can't accidentally take a whole bottle of pills."
